Chapter 27

I opened one of the French doors, out of sight from the bathroom, and stepped out into the sunlight without giving him a chance to reply. Once Tiny followed me, I shut the door behind us and walked the distance to where the railing overlooked the cliff drop-off. Too late I realized I stood right where Mr. Jorgensen had collapsed and died. I swallowed down my panic and looked out to sea. Boats, some with sails billowing in the wind, a few speed boats churning up wake, and mega cargo ships chugging in the far distance, dotted the water.

“This view is spectacular.” I tried to keep my voice low as I reminded myself that Tiny had met me twice before. But so far, he hadn’t indicated any recognition, and I hoped my luck held while Tillie snooped around. “How long have you worked for the Jorgensens?”

“A long time.” Mr. Chatty he was not.

“So, are you her bodyguard?”

“You could say something like that.”

“Do you get bored standing around all day?” I tried to channel a bored personal assistant, a bit on the airhead side. “My days are impossibly boring. She doesn’t want me to be on my cell phone checking Instagram even when there’s nothing going on. If I didn’t have so many credit card bills, I’d quit in a heartbeat.”

Tiny didn’t answer except for a grunt, like he’d tuned me out. I decided to press for some information like we were just two bored employees passing time and gossip.

“Mrs. S—don’t tell her I call her that—said that Mr. Jorgensen was murdered. Is that true? Were you here when it happened?”

“That’s what the cops say. He died right where you’re standing.” A smile finally flitted across the big man’s lips when I screeched and jumped back.

“Oh my gawd! Are you kidding me? Is his ghost still here?” I clutched my hand to my chest.

He shrugged.

“How did it happen?” I glanced around furtively then lowered my voice to a whisper. “Do you think the wife did it?”

Tiny’s eyes turned sharp and dark as his gaze focused on my face. He grabbed my arm. “Why would you say something like that? Who’s spreading those rumors?”

“Chill, dude. It’s always the spouse who does it in all the movies.” I held my hand up, palm facing him, and he released my arm. “OMG, I didn’t even know anything about this until Mrs. S told me why we were making this condolence visit on the drive here. No one’s said anything about who did it. I’m just shooting my mouth off until it’s time to get out of here.”

I breathed a little easier when his shoulders relaxed and he took a step back. “Don’t get so wound up. I’m not spreading rumors.”

“Here’s a fact you can spread if you feel you’ve got to keep shooting your mouth off. The caterer poisoned Mr. Jorgensen.” He crossed his arms in front of his chest and glared at me.

“Really? Did they arrest him, or was it a her?” I gazed out at sea to calm my nerves.
